The chief attraction of Rapid City is the over 1,200-acre Mount Rushmore National Memorial, where George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt, symbolizing the first 150 years of American history, were immortalized in granite by sculptor Gutzon Borglum, whose assistant, Janusz Korczak went on to sculpt the Crazy Horse Memorial nearby. Golfers also will appreciate the many scenic, naturally hilly and forested courses in the area. Buffalo still roam at Custer State Park and the Badlands, and around Devil's Tower across the state line in Wyoming, that unforgettable venue in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
